Suspension bearing covers, also called seals or dust caps, vary in design to suit the bearing they protect and the vehicle's environment.
Rubber seals (2RS): These are the most common type and provide the best defense against contaminants like dirt, dust, and moisture. Rubber seals are often used in automotive suspension systems and are considered "sealed for life," meaning they are not intended to be serviced.
Metal shields (ZZ): These metal covers offer moderate protection against larger debris but are not watertight. They are suitable for environments with less exposure to contaminants, such as inside an electric motor or in some industrial applications.
Plastic or metal caps: Some strut and hub assemblies use simple, hard plastic or metal dust caps. These are designed to snap over the outermost part of the bearing assembly to prevent large debris and water splashes from entering.
Integrated covers: In some applications, the cover is not a separate part but is built directly into the bearing housing. For example, some pillow block bearings have end covers that are sold as part of the unit.
